“Baza Barry” fished the lake at Castril where he caught a few carp and barbel of no great size. He also fished the river of the same name and tempted out some small trout. I don’t often see Barry because we live so far apart but on a recent trip he made to Mojacar I gave him a couple of lures used by me in Namibia and Botswana to catch fresh water bream. They are “Weed free frogs” the idea being to cast them into reeds, weed, overhanging bushes and trees or even the far bank of the river. Slowly retrieving them until they fall into the water just like frogs jumping in. Letting them sink to the bottom before jerking them slowly towards you. Barry may have to wait a few weeks until the real frogs and toads are on the move more and become a natural bait but I think it will be a killer method for both trout and black bass in our rivers and maybe some lakes such as the Murcia one I mention sometimes. It was something I was going to try myself but with sea fishing taking up so much of my time (Bad back permitting) I’m not sure when I’ll get chance to try it here in Spain.

I have received reports on the Calasparra and Lorca lakes and they are both fishing well in the warm sunshine but a cold wind puts the fish off feeding.

“Ham Radio Kevin” is out on the Hotel Indalo Arm as I write and he tells me he’s had a good week’s fishing with some decent striped bream to 3/4lbs. Although mullet are proving to be a bit difficult to catch at present he’s still catching palometes.

“London Bill” has spent the last week on Macenas beach and rocks in search of his illusive yellow fin tuna. He caught small sea bass, palometes and scad. They all fell to spinners
and rapalas with nothing being caught on poppers.

“Captain (Brian) Cuba” took “Farmer Rory”, “Paul the rope” (Now “Paul the splash”) and “birthday Boy” (Brian can’t remember his name!) out fishing. They fished off the river and caught a few including Paul having a decent red snapper. It wasn’t long before bites dried up and “BB” felt seasick so they headed back to port. To cut the story short Paul saw fit Rory easily make a four foot leap from the boat to the shore. Paul however, with his mobile phone in his pocket, didn’t leap as far and finished up swimming in the marina. New phone required I’m informed!

“Captain (Graham) Gnome” took “Hissing Sid” and his mate John out. They had a good day catching 9 different species including a good Sea Bass weighing 4.1/2lbs. It was caught on the bottom in 80’ with squid as bait, not often are sea bass caught that deep and I presume the squid must have been moving for it to take it. Other fish caught were, red snapper, white, golden and striped bream. Weaves, flounders, pandoras and a comber. Graham also went out with “Fireman Bob and his mate Peter. They had a few fish including a big weaver and good striped bream. Other fish boated were just the usual.

“Captain (Duncan) Sunshine” went out for a run but conditions weren’t good and it was rough, a quick trip to Villaricos and back just to give the engines a run. Duncan was a bit concerned about nets strung between rocks just off the shore. He’s going to take photographs if he sees it again.

Our girl Friday is going to get Andalucian beach, boat and coarse licenses on the 1st June. Please see me at the Beachcomber between the 25th and 30th May but phone first to make sure I’m in that day. Remember for beach and boat licenses I need one copy, passport and nie, for each license required.

An original English (in date) rod license is also required for the coarse license to save you having to partake in the 24 hour course! (This is for the coarse license only.)

For further information on any of the above or to find out about beach, boat or coarse fishing licenses, see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (Probably out fishing) ask staff for my mobile number.
Tight lines.
Beachcomber John.
